Obsessed Runner Blog

September 3, 2008 - My biggest pet peeve.

Yo Run Gang,

My pet peeve seeing a runner running on a main drag, running with and not against traffic Hey, youre giving running a bad name!

By not living a sedentary life we avoid some heath risks but take on others. Sure, the obvious risks like getting hit by a car while out on a run but the hidden risks associated with breathing and exchanging more air in our lungs and sweating and burning more calories, requiring more fluid and food put through the system. Running along a main thoroughfare and breathing in that swirling dust cloud filled with unburnt hydrocarbons and what ever else is blowing around makes me think of our lungs like a Fram oil filter trapping the dirt. Not a healthy thought, get me to a trail or side street at least!

As for fluids, Im sure that today, drinking close to a gallon of tap water each day adds additional risk, runners need clean water and healthy food lots of it!

Perhaps this is a good time for a shameless plug for our event water sponsor, Absopure, the water for runners. For the athlete, water delivery makes good sense. I just learned Absopure also has one of the largest plastic recycling operations in the world right here in Dundee, Michigan and that they will home deliver cases of plastic bottles, picking up your old plastic at the same time, cool eh? We will be serving Absopure at Dances With Dirt and Big House Big Heart and Absopure will be taking the empty plastic bottles to recycle them. Call 1-800-4-ABSOPURE for home or office delivery and thanks for putting up with my shameless plug, whew.

Run healthy,
Randy Step, an obsessed runner who obsesses on the run!

May 12, 2010 - Run Like an Animal!

Yo run gang,

Running gets us down to bedrock. Each run requires basic physical and mental strength just to head out the door. Some days, our body lets us know it really doesn't want to do this, much like dragging an unwilling dog on leash with his paws kicking and dragging. Ahh, but on those days when our bodies are jumping and barking at the door, ready to go ... We marvel at the "X" Games and sports that are called "Extreme", when in reality, there is no more extreme sport than distance running, one that has us heading out, day after day to do battle and keep the edge, heading out regardless of how we feel or what the conditions, knowing that nothing good comes easy and what we will get for our hard work and extreme behavior is good, very good. When race day dawns, hang on to that leash tight and be ready to keep up with a happy, well trained body, pulling us forward to personal greatness. Now, give yourself a pat on the head!

Run like an animal,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, and extreme athlete, just like you!

2013-06-26 - Escape to Reality

randy runningI believe many of us have been looking at running as an escape from reality, when in reality, running is an escape to reality! We start the preparation of escape by shedding our business attire and trappings of a complicated life and putting on our feather light, technical play clothes and footwear, a subtle change that seems to break us free and prepare us mentally to take those first steps.  We may run for 20 minutes or perhaps an hour, enjoying every minute of the endorphin flow and sweet rhythm of our body but the reality is that the gratification of the run lasts far beyond the cool down. After the run, the warm feeling in the chest and legs along with the feeling of rejuvenation and satisfaction (the running buzz) takes hold and lingers on for hours. Beyond this, the toning of the body and the new level of fitness we have given ourselves is like a suit of armor, making it possible to take on whatever the world throws our way. Dig it!

Play outside forever,

Randy Step, an admitted obsessed runners who goes nowhere without a bag of play clothes and fun shoes!
